This in-person two-day course provides participants with a broad understanding of key topics related to oil and natural gas pipelines and facilities, as outlined in the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Z662 Oil and Gas Pipeline Systems Standard.
Led by a seasoned instructor with over 40 years of industry experience and more than 16 years of delivering highly-rated CSA Z662 training, the seminar emphasizes the practical application of CSA Z662 across the entire pipeline system lifecycle—from design and construction to operation in onshore environments.
The instructor and the in-person format promote and encourage active participation and discussion, allowing attendees to share real-world challenges and experiences. These conversations help contextualize the CSA Z662 topics being discussed and foster a deeper understanding of the standard’s practical use.
Participants will learn to:
Understand how the CSA Z662 standard is developed and how the standard and pipeline regulations interact to contribute to pipeline system safety;
Learn the practical application of CSA Z662 to the pipeline system lifecycle from design, construction, operation, maintenance and abandonment;
Become aware of Safety and Loss Management System, Integrity Management Program and Engineering Assessment concepts;
Obtain foundational knowledge of CSA Z662 pipeline design and material requirements;
Understand when ASME B31.3 may be used within a CSA Z662 design and the key differences;
Learn the main requirements for construction, welding, pressure testing and corrosion control and their practical applications;
Recognize operations and maintenance requirements and relevant issues such as safety considerations and procedures and records requirements;
Learn the requirements for imperfection evaluations, acceptable repair methodologies, deactivation, reactivation and abandonment; and
Obtain a working knowledge of the application of the standard through the use of examples and contextual discussion of the intent of the clause.
Understand the major changes and their implications that occurred in the new 2023 version of the standard.
A complete set of course materials and lunch is included in the Understanding the CSA Z662 Oil and Gas Pipeline Systems Code course.
Who Should Attend
The course is designed for pipeline engineers, technologists, inspectors or other professionals who require a working knowledge of the standard.
Participants are encouraged but not required to bring a copy of the Standard (not included in course fees) to the sessions.
Joe began his career in pipeline and facility construction as a Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) technician, laying a strong foundation for his future in engineering. After earning his engineering degree, he built a distinguished career spanning decades in the oil and gas industry, where he now participates or leads initiatives in inspection, incident investigation, and integrity management oversight. His expertise also extends to shaping regulations and technical standards both in Canada and internationally.
For over 40 years Joe has applied CSA oil and gas standards and has been actively involved in the development of the CSA Z662 standard and related documents since 1999. His leadership includes serving as Chairman of the CSA Z662 Technical and Executive Committees and the Construction Technical Subcommittee. Currently, he serves as Vice-Chairman of the ISO TC67/SC 2 Mirror Committee, contributing to global standards harmonization.
Joe’s dedication to standards development was recognized with the prestigious CSA Award of Merit. He has authored technical papers published in conference proceedings and journals, and has delivered training and presentations on integrity management, construction techniques, standards and regulation development in numerous countries.
"This course was excellent at providing an overview of applying CSA Z662. It will be very good to apply the principals and guidelines. The classroom instruction, material and content are just right for the technological background."
