With the Canadian Government and most of its provinces moving toward improved methane gas emissions, regulatory requirements are now getting more stringent in emissions management. Increased requirements for planning, reporting, and reducing methane emissions are now a regular part of business in the energy industry. These increasing requirements target federal and provincial governments and industries, both in public and private sectors.
As a response, CSA has newly released a new code for “Reduction of Fugitive and Vented Emissions for Upstream Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry Systems CSA Z620.1”.
The AER has also updated its Directive 60 “Upstream Petroleum Industry Flaring, Incinerating, and Venting” to include new approaches for monitoring and lowering methane emissions.
This short course has been developed to inform participants of methane reduction basics, calculations, and new and changing regulations.
The course includes:
The principle of methane environmental impact
Participants in this section of the course will be trained to recognize the various greenhouse gases and the impact of each gas, especially methane on the atmosphere.
The significance of methane reduction will be elaborated in this section.
Calculating the impact of methane released by your facility
In this section, participants would learn how to calculate methane emissions.
AER Directive 060 new requirements
In this section, participants will become familiar with the new requirements of recent editions of Directive 060 and how to implement them.
CSA Z620.1 Reduction of fugitive and vented emissions for upstream petroleum and natural gas industry systems
A short introduction to this new CSA code is included in this course.

"Very well explanation of the basics of emissions calculations and the requirements within D60. Organization and layout of the information was very well done."
- Emissions Technologist
"Very Informative"
- Process Engineer
"A very good introductory course on Methane Reduction."
- Manager, EHS
"Amin did a great job on delivering information at a 'digestible' pace. I did not feel that we were getting information overload throughout the course. The Provincial vs Federal regulatory comparison was valuable and relevant for the audience.
The course was informative. I feel that this is something I and company should have been up to speed on earlier."
- Project Manager
"This course did a fantastic job of reviewing the changing requirements of Directive 60 and provided great direction on how to estimate venting in Alberta sites."
- Senior Engineer
"The instructor seemed knowledgably and was well organized. He covered all the bases needed.
It was a good introduction of methane regulations for someone brand-new to methane regs."
- Business Development
"Very well put together course and presentation, with adequate time for the required material.
Good level of detail, course use additional discussion from case studies perhaps."
