Course Description
This highly interactive and skill building one-day course is designed for leaders, especially those who are new to their role in leading others. Making the transition from “one of the team members” to a leader can be challenging and the role demands new skills, knowledge and mindset to become a highly competent and successful leader.

Throughout the day, participants will have the opportunity to actively engage in small group discussions, large group discussions, self-reflection learning activities, and lecturettes on a wide range of timely and relevant topics related to leadership.

Course Outline
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:


1. Define expectations related to the role of a leader including communicating, planning, organizing, motivating, delegating, monitoring and following up with employees.

2. Identify strengths and areas for development related to characteristics or attributes required of a successful leader.

3. Describe the guiding principles for creating and maintaining positive interactions with employees.

4. Identify factors that contribute to the motivation of employees.

5. Describe the various performance support skills including communication skills (e.g., listening, questioning and feedback) that are essential for creating and maintaining positive interactions with employees.

6. Explain the Interpersonal Communication Model and the factors influencing interpersonal communication.

7. Apply effective listening and questioning skills with employees.

8. Apply appropriate guidelines and techniques for giving and receiving feedback in the workplace.

9. Describe the differences between coaching and mentoring along with the importance of using coaching and mentoring skills.

10. Explain the role of a coach and the role of a mentor and a mentee in the coaching and mentoring process.

11. Identify performance issues or gaps with employees, conduct analyses of performance issues using a diagnostic tool, and conduct performance improvement discussions with employees.
Instructor
Jane Grant, CHRP, CMC
As an energetic and versatile Human Resources Management Consultant, Jane has over 25 years of experience in the design, facilitation, and evaluation of various training and development programs, including leadership development programs.

Jane’s passion and enthusiasm for the training and development area is evident in the facilitation of her highly interactive and engaging workshops. Jane’s participants have included those working in oil and gas, manufacturing, information technology, health care, government, education, engineering, not-for-profit, etc. Jane has also taught for many years at both the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University.

Jane is a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) and Certified Management Consultant (CMC). Jane is a member of the Human Resources Association of Calgary, the Human Resources Institute of Alberta, and the Canadian Association of Management Consultants.
