Course Description
This 2-Day course will review all main water treatment parameters without going into the chemistry of water. Operations of water treatment units will be explained in plain English at the level of general engineer’s knowledge, and plenty of case studies and practical guides will be used to help participants understand “what’s going on” in an industrial water treatment plant.

A complete set of course materials and a light lunch are included.
Who Should Attend
This course is designed for Process Engineers without water treatment knowledge, Control/Instrumentation personnel, Mechanical and Material Engineers, Project Managers and Planners who are involved in the industrial water treatment process and who need to have better understanding to do their tasks with higher quality.
Course Outline
Day 1:

• Introduction: Industrial water treatment and how it differs from
municipal water/wastewater treatment

• Water Resources: Surface Water, Underground Water, and
Wastewater

• Water in the Oil Industry: Boiler Water, Cooling Water, and Process
Water

• Water Parameters: Physical, Chemical (Organic, Inorganic), and
Biological Parameters and Water Mass Balance

• Scaling or precipitating effects of water

Day 2:

• Implementing the 3R and Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) approach

• Unit operations for removing impurities from water

• Process development for water treatment with three tools:
- General flow diagrams/Decision Charts
- "Cook Book” approach: Rule of thumbs
- Case studies

• Specific Case Studies: Water treatment in SAGD operation, water
treatment in refineries

• Economy of Water Treatment: treated water cost

• Alberta constraints on water consumption/discharge
Instructor
Mohammad Toghraei MSc. P.Eng.
Mohammad Toghraei has over 19 years experience in the field of Process engineering and industrial water treatment. His main expertise is in the treatment of wastewater from oil and petrochemical complexes. For the past eight years he has taken on different technical roles in water treatment areas of SAGD projects. He is now working as an independent consultant.

Mohammad also has a passion for helping new Engineers and new immigrants with their career development and to obtain their APEGGA licenses by explaining the main topics of Ethics and Law, and how these issues affect the Engineering, Geology and Geophysics professions.

Mohammad has received a BSc. degree in Chemical engineering and an MSc. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Tehran, and is a member of APEGGA.

After immigrating from his native Iran in 2003, Mohammad now lives in Calgary with his beautiful wife and daughter.
