Course Description
In this one-day session participants will learn accounting fundamentals to the extent that they will be conversant with accounting terminology and reporting standards – including financial statements, and become familiar with generally accepted accounting principles and recording standards.

A complete set of course materials and lunch is included in this course.

Who Should Attend
Professionals who have accountability or exposure to budgets and other internal financial reports, entrepreneurs, administrators, and those considering jobs in accounting-related fields will gain an understanding of accounting practices and the technical language used by accountants. Participants with or without bookkeeping backgrounds will apply greater depth to financial decision making as a result of this one-day session.
Course Outline
Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be familiar with:

  • The accounting profession and the function of accounting for different forms of businesses

  • The importance of ethics in accounting and social responsibility related to capital markets

  • The nature of accounting transactions and their impact on the components of the accounting equation

  • 4 basic financial statements (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Statement of Cash Flows, Statement of Owners’ Equity)

  • 6 basic accounting principles (business entity, objectivity, historical cost, time period, revenue recognition, matching)

  • Cash based transactions using the double entry method of accounting

  • Principles of accrual accounting

  • Application of accounting principles in a variety of organizational environments

  • Financial ratio analysis including most common calculations and measures
Instructor
Lisa Gallant
Lisa Gallant is the owner and manager of Checkone2 Enterprises Inc., a consultancy practice providing services to businesses in transition in a wide range of industries, which she started in 2007.

As a professional accountant, Lisa served as corporate officer and director, CFO, and VP of Finance for owner-managed companies since 1986, participating from start-up, development, through significant growth and divestiture in senior finance roles.

Since 2005 Lisa has served on the faculty of the SAIT Polytechnic School of Business. She has provided course development and instruction in accounting for both private sector and post-secondary institutions, and prepares and assesses candidates through the professional credentialing process on behalf of CGA Canada. In addition, Lisa serves as an entrepreneurism subject matter expert for CGA Alberta contributing articles for their Better Business Advocate in Alberta Venture Magazine, The Bottom Line, and CGA Magazine.

Lisa holds a Bachelor of Accounting Science degree from the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business, and is a member of the Certified General Accountants Associations of Alberta and Prince Edward Island.

In 2011, Lisa concluded her 23-year hiatus to Alberta, and returned home to Prince Edward Island, where she lives and conducts her businesses from a Prince Edward Island Registered Heritage Place in Eglington, on PEI’s beautiful Eastern Shore.
